The sanctuary, covers an area of 44.06 sq km, is located on the southern bank of river Brahmaputra in the Sonitpur district of Assam. The sanctuary falls within Laokhowa - Burachapori eco-system. Formed by wet alluvial grassland, riparian and semi-evergreen forests the park also has wetland and river network.
The forest area was declared a ‘Reserved Forest’ in 1974 and get a ‘Sanctuary’ status in 1995.
