Located at a distance of 50 km from Jammu at the foothills of Trikut Mountains Katra town is the shelter for visiting the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi or Trikuta Bhagwati. From this town the cave shrine is a 13 km walk / ride (height 5200 ft) on the hill. The cave shrine of Mata Vasihno Devi has been a symbol of faith and devotion to millions of devotees from all over the world. It is one of the most visited place by hindu pilgrims.
Once a pilgrim reaches Katra he has to obtain a yatra permit (Yatra parchi) from the permit counter of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. About 18000 pilgrims are permitted to proceed every day on rush days from Katra to Vaishno Devi Ji.
Navaratra : J&K Tourism Department in active association with Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and district administration celebrates the Navaratra festival at Katra, the base camp of Vaishno Devi. Folk and devotional music, flower shows, poney/pithu race, wrestling competitions are the highlights of this 9 day festival. The festival kick starts with a traditional procession consisting of school students and cultural troupes across Katra.
