Situated at an altitude of 2730 m, Sonmarg the meadow of gold is a quiet meadow enveloped by glaciers, small plateaus, woods and snowfields.  The Sindh River (not the famous Sindh river) that meanders through the valley abounds with Trout and Mahaseer. Sonmarg ('The meadow of gold') is a journey through the spectacular countryside of Kashmir valley.

The hill resort is the starting point of few good treks to mountain lakes (Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal). Srinagar-Zojila pass-Kargil-Leh Road passes through Sonmarg. It is also a gateway for the holy Amarnath cave yatra.


The picturesque town of Sonmarg is a charming place full of natural grace and gifts. It is a place of adventure lovers delight for its trek routes, glaciers and towering mountain peaks. It is also a place for fun and sports like angling and river rafting. 

Thajiwas 3km from Sonmarg, provides a chance to enjoy sledge ride on the snow. In mid-Summer Ponies are can take you up to the glacier.

Kheer Bhawani 5km from Ganderbal is the shrine of kheer bhawani at a village called Tulmul.

Krishnasar Lake

 Krishnasar Lake (3801 m) is located a few kilometers from Sonamarg. The lake is dedicated to trout fish conservation. One can enjoy trout fishing in the lake, though winter time is recommended. It is also renowned for its fascinating view.


Adventure-Sports- Mansbal Lake: The lake (4km long and 1.2 km wide) is famous for water nuts, lotus flowers. Manasbal lake is also a bird watchers paradise. In summer shikaras are available on the lake.

 This lake is located 32km from Srinagar,off the Sonmarg-Ganderbal road.


Amarnathji Yatra (Route II): Baltal,15 km from Sonmarg at an altitude of 2743 m,is the base camp of Amarnathji yatra. Baltal is beautiful grassland at the foot of Zoji la pass. During the Amarnath yatra, many pilgrims set up camps here to rest. The trek / pony ride of 14 km from Baltal to Holy Cave of Amarnathji and return to Baltal can be comfortably done within the same day.

Sonmarg Gangabal trek.

 The famous Gangabal trek starts from Sonamarg across the Sind River with steep Nichna Pass at 4080m. Passing via Vishansar Lake at 3680m and further to Krishansar Lake (3819m) 14km, a marvelous campsite urges you to stop overnight. A 23 km trek to Gadsir Lake (3900m) passes through steep climbs followed by rapid descent, where after the magical Gadsir Lake appears,mostly full of broken glacier masses, a trek of 17 km via Satsar Lake (3600m) passes through Gangabal Valley,where the view of Harmukh Peak is breathtaking. A few kilometers of walking will take you to Gangabal Lake (3570m) at the foot of Harmukh; a plain campsite amidst the valley is an unforgettable expreince.


The nearest airport is in Srinagar.


The closest railhead is Jammu Tawi in Jammu. The distance of approximately 400 km between Sonmarg and Jammu is covered in almost 10 hrs.
