On the banks of Jhelum river the summer capital city of Jammu & Kashmir was founded by the King Pravarasena II more than 2,000 years ago. The name Srinagar was derived from two Sanskrit words, Sri (meaning profusion and wealth) and Nagar, (meaning a city).     
Srinagar at the height of 1730 mts is the most important city of the Kashmir Valley. The city carries the imprints of the Mughals and the British regime till date.The city is famous for its lakes, gardens, the charming houseboats, traditional handicrafts, kashmiri clothes and dry fruits.
Charmed by its natural beauty Mughal emperor Jahangir on his first visit to this place exclaimed “If there is a heaven on earth, it's here, it's here, it's here".

The Mughal Gardens: With designed lawns, beautiful fountains, vibrant flowerbeds with the fascinating Dal in front - the three Mughal Gardens of Chesmashahi, Nishat and Shalimar are the Mughal Emperors' concept of paradise and are today very popular to the tourists all the world over. These gardens are at their best during spring.

Nishat Bagh:

Situated on the banks of the picturesque Dal Lake and Zabarwan Mountains forming its backdrop is one of the largest and most beautiful gardens built by the Mughals. Asaf Khan, the brother of Nur Jahan, designed the Kashmir Nishat Bagh in 1633 AD.  Nishat bag is famous for its beautiful lawns with a wide collection of flower plants and trees.

FAIR & FESTIVAL IN SRINAGAR

Tulip Festival : The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden located in Siraj Bagh is spread over 30 hectares. With more than 70 varieties of Tulip it is Asia`s largest Tulip garden. 

Spring Festival/Baisakhi : Celebrated to mark the harvest, it is considered auspicious for marriages. Devotees go for a ritual dip in lakes and rivers. Numerous fairs add to the festivities.

Cherry Festival : The Cherry festival held across Kashmir showcases plentiful of cherry varieties. Competitions among cherry growers add to the attraction.

Arts & Crafts Festival : This festival is held at the side of the Naggen lake to showcase the rich legacy of Kashmiri handicrafts. On display are Kashmiri Shawls, wood carvings, paper machie and live cultural programs. 

Shikara Festival : The waters of Dal Lake come to life with Shikara festival. The festival is marked by Shikara rides past willow fringed lake-ways, floating vegetable markets and lotus patches. 

Gardens of Paradise festival :The historical Mughal Gardens of Srinagar are the venue for this festival. Food stalls showcasing authentic Kashmiri cuisines and cultural events are held amidst terraced landscape with cascading fountains.

Apple Festival :This festival is celebrated to usher the harvest of apples. Celebrated across Kashmir valley, the event consists of stalls showcasing different varieties of luscious apples and competition among Apple growers.

Saffron Festival :This event showcases different varieties of Saffron grown in Kashmir. Along with saffron cultural programs and Kashmiri cuisine are also showcased to the tourists.
