Picturesque Varkala lies on the Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala State. Varkala is a relatively recent tourist discovery and is home of the popular Papanasam Beach. Also, the Samadhi of Kerala's saint Sree Narayana Guru is situated in the Varkala town and hence has become a place of pilgrimage. The Varkala beach is a calm and peaceful sea resort rich in mineral water springs. This little beach town in the green-and-silver state offers a wonderful refuge for those who prefers unspoiled beaches, pretty cliff faces, red rocks and palm trees. Varkala is also steeped in history, and is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.
The interesting factor that set apart Varkala from other beaches of Sothern Kerala is the fascinating stretch of cliffs. Kerala coasts are generally flat in nature. Varkala alone is the only beach in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. An important thing to keep in mind is the interesting tide pattern at Varkala. This sees Papanasam Beach completely immersed in the ocean during the monsoon season, while the black beach is accessible. After the monsoon, this trend reverses with the black beach becoming engulfed in water and Papanasam Beach open.
A two thousand year old shrine the Janardhanaswamy Temple stands on the cliffs a short distance away. The Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the great Hindu reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru (1856 - 1928) is also close by. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30th December to 1st January.
Another specialty of this coastal town is plenty of options available to experience yoga, Ayurvedic massage and therapies.
