Maharashtra is a state located in the South-Western part of India. It is the second most populous after Uttar Pradesh and third largest state by area in India. Maharashtra is also called breath of India being the richest state in India, contributing to 25% of the country's industrial output and 23.2% of its GDP in 2010-11.
In the 17th century, the Marathas rose under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji against the Mughals who ruled a large part of India. By 1760, Maratha power had reached one-third of the Indian sub-continent. After the third Anglo-Maratha war, Maharashtra became a part of Bombay state under the British rulers.
