Jaisalmer, one may also call it the Golden City is on the western most frontier of India in the state of Rajasthan which is very near to the border with Pakistan. Being the nearest city in the Thar Desert it is considered to be the driest place in India.
The major part of the local people of Jaisalmer are known as Bhati-Rajput  that is named for renowed warrior ‘Bhati’. Deoraj, the most famous prince of the Bhati family was regarded as the original founder of the Jaisalmer heredity and with him the title of rawal commenced.  In 1156 Rawal Jaisal, the sixth in order of succession from Deoraj, invented the fort and city of Jaisalmer making his capital as he turned his former capital at Lodhruba (about 15 km to the north-west of Jaisalmer).

The city was named after the name of its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajpur Kind in 1156 AD Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is also called as "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in all the architectures of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area.

The city was under the rule by the Jaisalmer Fort and is uncommon comparing to the other forts in India. Desert Safari in the sand dunes of Jaisalmer is an unbelievable experience.

Jaisalmer Fort: The fort with yellowish stone looks as the colour of gold and known as the Sonar Kila is one of the prime attractions of Jailsalmer.  Jaisalmer fort under the setting sun and golden hues of the desert looks fascinating. The inside decoration of the fort is worth watching.  The fort is also called a working fort as there are people living and working within its walls. Tourists can also visit many havelis of rich merchants which are also having a touch of great interior design artistically.

There are plentiful lookouts (at least five) within the fort that give a spectacular view out crossing the city and desert.

Gadisar Lake: This lake is full of rainwater which feeds the entire Jaisalmer city. Gadisar Lake is bounded by temples and tomb of saints. A desert cultural centre is nearby the lake. Close to this centre there is a museum constructed by the collection of a school teacher Mr. N.K.Sharma. This centr...
