Tsomgo means source of the water in Bhutia language

Tsomgo (Changu) lake is situated on the Gangtok - Nathula highway. It was on the old trade route from India to China (before 1962). The oval shaped lake is 1 km long with 15 mts depth. To visit the lake an Inner Line Permit id required for both Indian and Foreig nationals. Permit can be obtained from the Police through the Tourism Department or travel agents.

A winding road through rugged mountain terrain and sharp cliffs takes you to Tsomgo,. The lake gets its water from the melting snows of the mountains surrounding the lake. The lake looks different at different seasons. In winter the lake remains frozen with the area around it covered in snow while in late spring the flowers add a riot of colours around the lake. Watch Migratory birds around. Rides on yaks and mules are available. You can enjoy this wonderful beauty of nature with a mug of coffee from the adjacent cafeteria.

Sherthang mart is on Tsomgo-Nathula route. Chinese traders do their business here. ATM counter is available here.

MUST SEE IN TSOMGO(CHANGU) LAKE

You can hire a car from Gantok to see the lake, Nathula & Baba mandir and retun. Nathula remains closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Nathula:

The pass is 56 kms (Tsomgo lake-18 kms) from Gangtok at an altitude of 14,450ft. nestled between India and China in the Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the highest motorable roads and a region of many verities of alpine flora and fauna. Nathula is open only for Indian nationals on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The visitors have to get the permit to visit the place by applying to the Tourism Department through a registered Travel Agency.

Baba Mandir:

This temple is dedicated to Baba Harvajan Sing, a soldier of Punjab regiment, who died on October 1968 I accident. The temple is located 4 kms from Nathula.
