Tsomgo means source of the water in Bhutia language
Tsomgo (Changu) lake is situated on the Gangtok - Nathula highway. It was on the old trade route from India to China (before 1962). The oval shaped lake is 1 km long with 15 mts depth. To visit the lake an Inner Line Permit id required for both Indian and Foreig nationals. Permit can be obtained from the Police through the Tourism Department or travel agents.
A winding road through rugged mountain terrain and sharp cliffs takes you to Tsomgo,. The lake gets its water from the melting snows of the mountains surrounding the lake. The lake looks different at different seasons. In winter the lake remains frozen with the area around it covered in snow while in late spring the flowers add a riot of colours around the lake. Watch Migratory birds around. Rides on yaks and mules are available. You can enjoy this wonderful beauty of nature with a mug of coffee from the adjacent cafeteria.
