Chidambaram, in Indian state of Tamil Nadu is famous for its cultural heritage and the Nataraj temple. Amongst the enormous temples the Nataraj Temple at Chidambaram is known for architecture and sculptural magnificence.  The architectural brilliance collaborating with music and dance, Chidambaram’s reputation is called as a single instance. Several rich legends are associated with Chidambaram. The best known, are those depicting the Cosmic Dance of Shiva, the dance duel between Shiva and Kaali and the dance on Tevaram hymns.


Nataraja Temple:

In Chidambaram this Nataraja Temple is one of the significant sightseeing for the tourists. Nearest towns are Cuddalore and Neyveli. Spreading over an area of 40 acres the temple is settled in the central Chidambaram. The sanctorum roof of the encient temple is made of gold plates. The main idol of the temple is Lord Shiva which is called as Nataraja and is called as the Cosmic Dancer.   

This temple has five halls which are as follows:

Kanaka Sabha: This hall is having  gold plated roofs and the main is  present here in this Sabha.

Chit Sabha: This gold plated roof hall keeps in its possession the Akasa lingam. Nritta Sabha: Most beautiful of all the halls with 56 pillars, 108 poses of Bharat Natyam are depicted and built in the form of a chariot. Arudra Dharshanam: Idiols of God Nataraja and Goddess Shivakama Sundari are adorned with flowers and are taken through the streets of Chidambaram with music of Nadaswaram. The streets are also adorned with rangoli.

Natyanjali festival:

The prime attraction of this grand five-day occasion is the thousand pillard Raja Sabha of the Nataraj temple. Dancers participate from the all over the world in this festival takes place during month of February. 

Other festivals are Brahmotsavam, Ani Thirumanjanam, Thai Poosam, and Arudra Dharshan which attract large crowds from all places.


The nearest airports to Chidambaram are Tiruchirapalli (195 km) and Chennai (245 km).


Chidambaram lies on the main line of the Southern Railway and well connected with all the mejor railway station of the country.


Regular buses are available for all the major cities of Tamil Nadu.
