Ooty, the most glamorous hill resort of Nilgiri hills is renamed as Udhagamandalam. Low lying clouds, cool weather, beautiful landscape, spectacular Botanical Gardens, lakes and stone houses are the prime attractions of the tourists. People go to Ooty all round the year for its amazing beauty. A good number of tourists attraction nearby the hill station is also a reason of Its popularity. 


Botanical Garden:

The 150 years old Botanical garden attracts people for its well groomed plants, flowers and the wonderful lush green lawn.

Ooty Lake:

The man made Ooty lake is 65 acres in area with 2.75 Km length and about 120 m of average breadth is a top attraction of this region. Amidst green forest the lake is set to offer maximum enjoyment while boating. The children’s park on the banks with its toy train running round the lake is a huge favourite among the children. Nilgiri railways: Take the Heritage trip.

It is one of the UN Heritage Sites in India. The route is now called NMR-NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAIWAYS. Up to Coonoor this heritage train is still pulled by Steam engines. 

The 46 km joyful journey starts from Mettupalayam a small town at the foot of the great Nilgiris. The train with long whistles and small blue wooden bogies crosses almost 250 bridges and 15 tunnels. The route is serpentine and through tricky woods. The train crosses River Bhavani and reaches Kallar. From here it starts running on Abt rack and pinion system to climb up and cross 208 curves ahead. It has one of the the steepest tracks in Asia at a gradient of 8.33%. 

As the train slowly moves up you can see the change in vegetation from dry forests at down hill to mid tropical forests and then green tea estates, pine trees, grass hills and Ooty Plateau. The climate slowly changes from hot to an enjoyable cold. You may have a sight of deer or elephants on your journey.

The stations crossed are Kallar, Burliyar, Adderly, Hillgrove, Runnymade, KatteriRoad, Coonoor and Ooty. There are five small stations between ooty and Coonoor. The train takes 290 minutes to cover the distance (46 km).


Coimbatore and Mysore are the two nearby airports of Ooty.


Ooty has its own Railway Station named as Ooty Railway Station. The railstation is connected with the other parts of the country.


Ooty  is 19 Kms from Coonoor, 52 Kms from Mettupalayam, 84 Kms from Coimbatore, 104 Kms from Tiruppur, 127 Kms from Pollachi, 136 Kms from Palakkad, 154 Kms from Dharapuram, 159 Kms from Udumalaipettai and is linked throughBus services from all the mejor cities of the state.
