Haridwar is an important pilgrimage city and headquarter of Haridwar district of Uttarakhand. River Ganges, after flowing for 253 kilometres from its source at Gamukh of the Gangotri Glacier, touches the Indo-Gangetic Plains of North India for the first time at Haridwar. That’s why in encient days the city was called as Gangadwára. Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places to Hindus. Haridwar along with Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad is one of four sites where drops of Amrit, accidentally spilled over fromthe pitcher while being carried by the celestial bird Garuda. This is manifested in the Kumbha Mela being celebrated every 3 years in one of the 4 places, and thus every 12 years in Haridwar.. Brahma Kund, the spot where the Amrit fell, is located at and is considered to be the most sacred ghat of Haridwar. Haridwar is situated at height of 314 metres from the sea level, between Shivalik Hills in the North and Northeast and the Ganges River in the South. Legend has it that Bhagiratha, brought the Ganges into the earth, and into this point where his ancestors were burnt to ashes by the curse of the sage Kapila. Haridwar (and Rishikesh) represents the gateway to the Himalayan pilgrimage shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath. The pilgrimage to the Himalayan shrines begins only when the sun reaches the zodiac sign of Aries. The Ganga Aarti which is celebrated at 7 pm each night, is a spectacular sight, when the aarti ceremony is performed at all temples in Haridwar at the same instant (see image above). Hundreds throng to the ghats at Hari-ki-Pairi to participate in this festival. Offerings of lamps and flowers are made to the river immediately following this ceremony and it is a moving sight to watch hundreds of miniature lamps float along the river. Near Haridwar are the towns of Mayapuri and Kankhal.
Haridwar is one place where fairs are being organized with full enthusiasm round the year. During Somwati Amavasya, Kartik Poornima, Shravan Poornima, Ganga Dussehra and other important bathing dates of Hindu calendar lacs of devotees flok to Haridwar to take holy bath on river Ganga.
