In the 18th century Adi Guru Shankaracharya attained enlightenment here. The temples of Narsingh and Nav Durga are located in this hill station. Word ‘Jyotirmath’ means the place of Jyotirlinga of Shiva. Shankracharya founded one of the four piths “Centres’ for sanyashis here. It is considered to be one of the most sacred places by Hindus who believes that Badrinath (The God Vishnu) resides here in winter.
Orchards of peaches, apples, apricots and many citrus fruits are of scenic interest.
