At an elevation of 3185 mts the shrine of Yamunotri is one of the holy 'Char dhams' of Uttarakhand.
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and the place of the goddess Yamuna. The temple of Yamunotri falls on the left bank and was originally constructed by Maharaj Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.
The source or Yamuna is about 1 km ahead at an approach of about 4421 mt. A 13 kms treck starts from Hanumanchatti for Yamunotri. On the way one can stay at Janki Chatti (8 km. from Hanuman Chatti). There are Tourist Rest Houses, PWD Inspection Houses, Forest Rest Houses and Dharamshalas.
Like Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya . It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. The temple also closes on Diwali.
Take dipin taptkund (natural hot sulphur springs) which has numerous medicinal properties.
