The name "Buxa Tiger" has been derived from Buxa Fort a fort at an altitude of 867 metres on the Sinchula Range. This Tiger Reserve comprises the forest area of Rajabhatkhawa, Nimati, Barobisha, Rydak, Raimatang Jainti, Buxaduar and Bhutanghat. The main rivers are Sankosh, Raidak, Jayanti, Churnia, Turturi, Phashkhawa, Dima and Nonani. Area of the Tiger Reserve is 759 sq. km. with a core area of 331 sq. km. Buxa Tiger Reserve was set up in the year 1982-'83, which later in the year 1992, January, was declared a National Park.

It takes one to places where nature is yet in her primeval majesty, to a number of trekking routes through forest cover with its splendid beauty, to different hill tops and valleys. Rupang Valley, Rovers Point, Lepchakha (3kms. Trek from Buxa Fort) Pam Tsey La is such peaks.

The main Attractions of BTR is Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan ear, Barking Deer, Gaur, Pangolin, and Python. Buxa Duar is famous for its prison fort. Shikiyajhora Eco Spot is mini Sundarban of Jalpaiguri District (Dooars).

W.L.S. is closed during rainy season from 16th. June to 15th. Sept.


Take safari to feel the f

Tourists can visit the Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary, the Chilapata Forests and Jaldapara forests from here. However, the most popular destination around Buxa Tiger Reserve is Jayanti.


Buxa nestled at a height of 2,600 ft. is a two-hour trek through breathtaking surroundings from Santrabari, the starting point. The 4 km further trek to Rover Point, the haven of unknown birds, nestled at 4500 ft is truly exciting. Many trek enthusiasts also enjoy a 14 km trek to Roopam Valley in Bhutan. From Buxa, tourists can also take the 13 km to Jayanti, preferably with a guide. A stalactite cave is also found at Jayanti, known as the Mahakal cave.

Tourists can also enjoy a park safari by jeep or car at Jayanti or Rajabhatkhawa. Visit “Pukri Mai,” a sacred pond, where fish like Singi, Magur and Turtles are nurtured. Some festivals are also celebrated in the region by Hindus, Buddhists and local tribes.


Bagdogra is the nearest Airport from where one can go by above routes; (Siliguri to Bagdogra 13 km.) private vehicles are available for Buxa.


The Nearest railhead to Buxa Tiger Reserve is Alipurduar Junction just 17 kms away. New Jalpaiguri is 150 kms from Buxa Tiger Reserve.
