Darjeeling District is the northernmost district of the state of West Bengal in eastern India in the foothills of the Himalayas. The district is famous for its beautiful hill Kalimpong, Kurseong and Siliguri, three other major towns in the district, Mirik, another town of the district, has been developed as a lake resort since the late 1970s in Darjeeling .The entire hilly region of the district comes under the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, a semi-autonomous administrative body under the state government of West Bengal. The council covers the three hill subdivisions of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.In 1835, Darjeeling was annexed by the East India Company from Sikkim. Prior to that, Darjeeling formed a part ofSikkim and for a brief period of Nepal.Darjeeling hill area is formed of comparatively recent rock structure that has a direct bearing on landslides. However, heavy monsoon precipitation is however a very common cause of the landslides. Soils of Darjeeling hill areas are extremely varied, depending on elevation, degree of slope, vegetative cover and geolithology.
Darjeeling district has three wildlife sanctuaries: Jorepokhri, Mahananda, and Senchal.
In addition to Durga Puja, Diwali, Saraswati Puja and Shivratri etc., there are local festivals unique only to this region.
Tibetan New Year (Loshar):
The Lepchas and Bhutias celebrate the New Year in January, while the Tibetans have their Devil Dances to celebrate their New Year in their monasteries from the last week of February to March. As in the Chinese tradition the snake or spectacular dragon dances curl through the streets of Darjeeling.
Dalai Lama Birthday Celebration:
During the months of July and August the people of Darjeeling celebrate the birthday of Dalai Lama. They make this occasion very illustrious with processions.
To promote the Samsing-Jaldhaka area in the foothills of the Bhutan Himalaya under Darjeeling Hills as a major orange growing landscape within the pristine nature, Orange Festival takes place every year.
Birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated with procession from Buddhist monasteries with Lamas, musical troupe followed by Lord Buddha's idol, and the procession usually carries the Buddhist holy books around town. Buddha Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated at various Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling. This festival is celebrated in the month of May.
