Legend has it around 1577A.D a Rajput prince from Rajasthan Sarveshwar Singh who was one the officers in Man Sigh's army who came to capture Bengal on behalf of the Mughal emperor Akbar the great. He belonged to the Kshtriya Chandra Vansha Chauhan clan of Rajputs . He invaded the deep forest region known as Junglekhanda and defeated the tribal rulers the Mals and adopted the surname Malladeb and set up his kingdom with it's capital nameing it Jhargram.
