The historic town of Belur located on the banks of River Yagachi, in Hassan district ofKarnataka.

Belur (formerly known as Velapuri) became prominent and transformed as 2nd capital city of the Hoysala’s after the fall of their original capital Dwarasumudra (now known as Halibeedu or Halibidu). The capital city of Dwarasumudra was destroyed by the sultans of the Northern India.

Hoysalas ruled the Deccan and the parts of present day Tamilnadu, between 11th and 13th Centuries. During their 300 years regim they became famous as the patronsof art, culture and architecture. Hoysalas have built numerous temples and monuments. Belur is the best of the Hoysala creation. The magnificent monument of Belur, the awesome architecture and splendid sculptures make belur famous allover the world.

Belur and Halibeedu are Jewels in the Indian cultural heritage. Both the sites are declared as heritage site by UNESCO.

MUST SEE IN BELUR

The main attraction in Belur is the Chennakeshava temple complex dedicated to Lord ‘Chennakeshava’ (handsome Vishnu) temple.

Chennakesava temple complex:

This complex comprises of the Chennakesava Temple (dedicated to Lord Chennakeshava) as the centre piece, surrounded by the Kappe Chnnegraya temple, and two more shrines. The Chennakesava Temple, one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture, was built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1114 AD.

The temple is a house of sculptures showcasing variety of ornaments, the doorways, the ceilings, the birds, the animals, dancers and other figures are fully decorated as if they are full of life and vigour with variety of actions and movements.The doorways are guarded on either side by the gorgeously decorated  dvarapalaka (doorkeepers).

FAIR & FESTIVAL IN BELUR

Hoysala Mahotsava: The magnanimous dance festival held at the impressive Hoysala temples in Belur and Helebid is a glorious event. This cultural extravaganza is celebrated in the month of March.

The nearest international airport is Mangalore (168 Km) with connections to most destinations in the Middle-east region. However, a bigger and better airport with plentiful taxi services is Bangalore International Airport (232 Km).

Hassan (about 40kms from Belur) Banavara and Arasikere are also near Belur.
