The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district (north-east of Kochi) on the northern bank of the Periyar River. An area of about 25 km covered with deciduous forests and plantation of rosewood, teak etc is one of the important bird sanctuaries of India. The literal meaning of Thattekad is flat forest, the region is an evergreen low-land forest and is located between the branchesof Periyar River , the longest river in Kerala.
Designed by a famous ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali, the Thattekad bird sanctuary is home to a large number of (bird species over 250) bird species, around 28 species of animals and nine varieties of reptiles. Rare birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Black winged Kite, and the Night Heron are also commonly sighted here. Also called The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, this bird sanctuary was described by Dr. Ali as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India comparable only with eastern Himalayas. The bird sanctuary is rich in teak and mahogany plantation.
