With a backdrop Neelkanth Peak the famous Badrinath temple is located at a height of 3133 mts on the Himalaya facing Alakananda river. It is believed that Adi Guru Shankaracharya was the the founder of the temple. The temple was latter built by the Kings of Garhwal about two centuries ago.The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, established prior to Vedic period. The hot spring is just in front of temple and devotees used to take bath here. The two sides of Badri temple is flanked by two hills Nar & Narayan.

Badrinathdham is the most popular of Chardham of Hinduu mythology.

 Every year the temple remains open from April-May to the third week of November.

Other Four ‘Badris’:

Yog dhyan Badri: The temple is located at Pandukeshwar (1920 mts.) just 24 km short of Badrinath on Rishikesh- Badrinath route.

Bhavishya Badri: The temple is at an altitude of  3641 mts. Tourists need to treck 17 kms beyondTapovan.

Adi Badri: The main temple is of Narayan (Vishnu) establish by Shankaracharya. Out of 16 temples 7 encient temples are of Gupta age. The place located on Karnprayag Ranikhet road.

Vriddha Badri: The temple is at a place called Animath (1380 mts), 7 kms from Joshimath. Several centuries before the advent of Adi Guru Shankaracharya, the idol of Badrinath was placed and worshipped here. 


The route to Badrinath is one of the most arduous one due to the lofty hilly terrain, curves and cliffs amidst scenically beautiful surroundings.

The Badrinath temple has three sections - Garbhagriha (Sanctum), The Darshan Mandap, and Sabha Mandap. The Garbhagriha (Sanctum) houses Lord Badri Narayan, Kuber (God of wealth), Narad Rishi, Uthavar, Nar & Narayan. Lord Badri Narayan (also called as Badri Vishal) is armed with Shankh (Conch) and Chakra in two arms in a lifted posture and two arms rested on the lap in Yogamudra.The principal image is of black stone and it represents Vishnu seated in meditative pose.

Neelkanth, which is also known as the 'Garhwal Queen', is named after Lord Shiva. It is a snowy peak in the shape of a pyramid that forms the background of the Badrinath. The peak is situated at an average elevation of around 6,597 m above sea level.

The most prominent festival held at Badrinath Temple is Mata Murti Ka Mela. The festival is to commemorate the descent of the Ganga River on mother earth. T

Another important festival is 'Badri Kedar' festival. This festival is celebrated during the month of June in both the temple and the Kedarnath temple. During this 8 days festival cultural programmes take place at both the temple.
