Ranikhet, at 6000 feet is a picturesque hill station with beautiful meadows, charming lush and dense green forests, fascinating mountain peaks and the exotic flora and fauna. As per the legend the name Ranikhet is came from Queen Rani Padmini, wife of King Sudhardev. Rani Padmini had chosen the area for her residence. Since that time the place came to be known as Ranikhet which, literally, means "Queen's Field". In late 1860s the British established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here and used the station as a retreat from the heat of the Indian summer.
